Essential TOPIK II Grammar (Levels 3–4)

Last updated March 20266 min read

TOPIK II reading tests grammar directly in questions 1 to 4 (fill-in-the-blank) and indirectly in questions 16 to 18 (paragraph fill-in). Knowing the most frequently tested patterns saves time on these questions and improves comprehension across the entire reading section.

This guide covers the grammar patterns that appear most often at the Level 3 to 4 range. These are the patterns you should know confidently before test day.

Connectors (접속 부사)

Connectors link sentences and signal logical relationships. They are heavily tested in reading questions 16 to 18 and sentence ordering questions 13 to 15. Choosing the wrong connector changes the entire meaning of a passage.

KoreanMeaningUsage Context
그러나HoweverContrast with the previous statement
따라서ThereforeLogical conclusion or result
게다가Moreover, in additionAdding supporting information
반면에On the other handContrasting two different situations
그런데But, by the wayIntroducing a contrasting or unexpected point
In other words, that isRestating or clarifying the previous point
한편Meanwhile, on the other handIntroducing a different perspective or topic
그러므로Therefore (formal)Formal conclusion, common in academic passages
그래서So, thereforeCause and effect (less formal than 따라서)
하지만But, howeverContrast (less formal than 그러나)
Test tip: When a fill-in-the-blank question asks you to choose a connector, read the sentences before and after the blank. Determine if the relationship is contrast, addition, cause-effect, or restatement. This narrows your choices to one or two options immediately.

These endings appear in reading questions 1 to 4 (grammar fill-in-the-blank) and throughout reading passages. Understanding their meaning is essential for reading comprehension at the Level 3 to 4 range.
