TOPIK IBT vs PBT

Last updated March 20264 min read

TOPIK is offered in two formats: PBT (Paper-Based Test) and IBT (Internet-Based Test, also called computer-based). Both award the same TOPIK levels and the certification is identical regardless of format. The main differences are the scoring scale, how you input writing answers, and the audio delivery method.

IBT Level Thresholds (Out of 600)

Because IBT is scored out of 600 instead of 300, the level thresholds are scaled accordingly. The difficulty and content are the same. The doubled scale is not because the test is harder.

Writing: Typing vs Handwriting

On the PBT, you write essays by hand on an answer sheet. On the IBT, you type your essays on a computer. This is a significant practical difference for many test-takers.

If you are faster at typing Korean than writing by hand, the IBT may give you an advantage on the writing section. You can also edit and rearrange text more easily. However, if you are not comfortable with Korean keyboard input, practice typing before the test.

The IBT writing interface allows you to see your character count in real time, which helps you stay within the target length for each essay. On the PBT, you need to estimate this yourself using the grid paper.

Listening: Headphones vs Speakers

PBT listening audio is played through room speakers. Your experience depends on speaker quality, room acoustics, and your seating position. On the IBT, each test-taker wears headphones with individual volume control. The audio quality is more consistent and you control the volume.

If listeningis a weaker section for you, the IBT's headphone setup removes some of the environmental variables that can affect comprehension on the PBT.

Test Center Availability

The PBT has been offered since 1997 and has a wide network of test centers both in Korea and overseas. The IBT is newer and currently available at fewer locations. Availability is expanding, but check the TOPIK website to confirm whether IBT is offered near you before planning around it.

Overseas test-takers may find that only PBT is available at their local test center. Within Korea, most major cities offer both formats.
