TOPIK for Jobs and Careers in Korea

Last updated March 20266 min read

TOPIK is the standard proof of Korean proficiency for employers in Korea. Not every job requires it, but having a score on record opens doors and simplifies visa processing. The immigration guide covers visa requirements in detail. This guide covers what employers actually want.

TOPIK Level Requirements by Field

These are typical expectations, not universal rules. Individual employers set their own standards. When a job posting lists a TOPIK requirement, it is usually a hard minimum.

FieldTypical TOPIK LevelNotes
Teaching EnglishNot requiredTOPIK 3+ helps with daily life and coworker communication
Entry-level office/admin3–4Enough for emails, meetings, basic documents
Corporate (Korean companies)4–5Samsung, LG, SK often add their own language tests
IT/Engineering (multinational)3–4 or English-onlyDepends on team language; code reviews may be in English
IT/Engineering (Korean companies)4+Internal communication and documentation in Korean
Government/public sector5–6Strict requirements; some positions require Level 6
Translation/interpretation6Level 6 is the baseline; practical skills tested separately
Healthcare5+Additional licensing exams required (in Korean)
Broadcasting/media6Near-native fluency expected for on-air and editorial roles
Customer-facing (service, sales)4+Must handle real-time spoken Korean with customers
Level 4 is the inflection point. Below Level 4, most Korean-language positions are out of reach. Level 4 is where the job market starts to open up for foreign professionals.

Visa Connection

Your TOPIK level directly affects visa eligibility. The main work-related visas and their TOPIK requirements:

VisaPurposeTOPIK Role
E-7Professional workLevel 4+ for most occupation categories
F-2-7Points-based residentLevel 3: 10 pts, Level 4: 15 pts, Level 5+: 20 pts (out of 120 total, 80 needed)
D-10Job seekerLevel 4+ recommended; strengthens your application
F-6MarriageNot formally required, but helpful for the interview process

The F-2-7 points system is worth understanding if you plan to stay long-term. TOPIK Level 5 or 6 earns the maximum 20 language points. Since you need 80 points total, those 20 points are a significant portion. See the immigration guide for the full F-2-7 breakdown.

What Employers Actually Look For

TOPIK is the baseline proof of Korean ability. It gets you past the resume screen. After that, most employers test Korean proficiency themselves.

Practical Advice for Job Seekers

Put Your TOPIK Level on Your Resume

List your TOPIK level on your Korean resume (이력서). It is expected for foreign applicants. Format: "TOPIK II Level 5 (Certificate No. XXXXX, valid through YYYY-MM)". Include the expiration date so employers can see it is current.

Keep Your Certificate Valid

TOPIK certificates expire 2 years after the results announcement date. If your certificate has expired, retake the test before applying. Employers and immigration offices check validity. An expired certificate carries no weight. Check upcoming test dates.

Aim for Level 5 if You Can

Level 4 opens the door. Level 5 makes you competitive. The jump from 4 to 5 earns an additional 5 points on the F-2-7 visa, signals professional-level fluency to employers, and qualifies you for a wider range of positions. If you are already at Level 4, the investment to reach Level 5 pays off.

TOPIK Is Not Enough on Its Own

TOPIK proves reading, listening, and writing ability. It does not test speaking. Employers know this. Strong TOPIK scores paired with poor spoken Korean will not get you hired. Practice conversational Korean alongside test preparation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TOPIK required for all jobs in Korea?

No. English-teaching positions, some multinational companies, and certain IT roles operate in English. But for any position that involves Korean-language communication, most employers expect at least TOPIK 4. Even at English-friendly companies, having TOPIK certification on your resume strengthens your application.

What is the minimum TOPIK level for a work visa?

The E-7 professional work visa typically requires TOPIK Level 4 or higher. The exact requirement depends on your occupation category. Some high-demand technical fields may accept lower levels if the employer demonstrates the work environment uses English.

Does my TOPIK certificate expire for employment purposes?

Yes. TOPIK certificates are valid for 2 years from the results announcement date. Both employers and immigration offices check validity. If your certificate has expired, you need to retake the test before applying.
