How to Register for TOPIK
TOPIK registration opens 2–3 months before each test date and lasts only 3–5 days. Popular test centers fill up quickly. How you register depends on whether you are testing in Korea or overseas.
Registration in Korea
Domestic registration is handled online at topik.go.kr. Create an account, then follow these steps during the registration window:
- Log in and select the test date and level (TOPIK I or TOPIK II).
- Enter your personal information. Your English name must match your passport or ID exactly.
- Select a test center from the available locations.
- Upload a passport-style photo (see requirements below).
- Pay the registration fee by the same-day deadline.
- Confirm your application details and save your registration confirmation.
Registration Fees
| Test | PBT Fee | IBT Fee |
|---|---|---|
| TOPIK I (Levels 1–2) | 40,000 KRW | 70,000 KRW |
| TOPIK II (Levels 3–6) | 55,000 KRW | 95,000 KRW |
Payment is accepted by credit/debit card, online banking, or bank transfer. The payment deadline is the same day as registration: 4 PM for credit cards, midnight for virtual accounts. Overseas fees vary by country, typically $30–$60 USD.
Photo Requirements
Your photo is checked against your ID on test day. If your photo does not match how you look on test day, you may be denied entry.
- Size: 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm
- Format: JPG or JPEG, under 200 KB
- Background: White only
- Recency: Taken within the last 6 months
- Restrictions: No sunglasses, hats, earphones, or hair covering the face. Front-facing, color only.
Registration Overseas
Overseas registration is decentralized. Each country handles it through Korean embassies, Korean Cultural Centers, King Sejong Institutes, or partner universities. There is no single global portal.
To register overseas:
- Contact your nearest Korean embassy or consulate for test dates and registration procedures.
- Check with local Korean Cultural Centers or King Sejong Institutes.
- Some locations accept in-person registration only. Others accept email applications with scanned documents and payment receipts.
Overseas registration windows are typically longer than domestic (2–3 weeks vs. 3–5 days), but dates and fees vary by country. If fewer than 10 applicants register for a particular test level at a location, that test may not be held.
Cancellation and Refunds
| When You Cancel | Refund |
|---|---|
| During registration period | 100% |
| Up to 1 week after registration closes | 50% |
| 1–2 weeks after registration closes | 40% |
| Less than 2 weeks before exam | No refund |
Common Registration Mistakes
- Name mismatch. Your registered name must match your ID exactly. If it does not, you will be turned away on test day. You cannot change your name after selecting a test center. Cancel and re-register if needed.
- Missing the window. There is no late registration. If you miss the 3–5 day window, you wait for the next exam cycle.
- Photo issues. Wrong dimensions, dark background, or an old photo can delay or block your registration. Use a recent passport-style photo on a white background.
- Waiting too long. Popular centers fill up on the first day. Do not wait until the last day of the registration window.
