Einbürgerungstest & Leben in Deutschland: Format, Pass Marks & Preparation
Two German tests draw on one official question catalogue published by the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF). The Einbürgerungstestis the naturalization test: passing it proves the knowledge of Germany's legal and social order that a citizenship application requires. Leben in Deutschland is the final test of the Orientierungskurs (orientation course) inside the federal integration course, and the knowledge it proves is also what an application for a Niederlassungserlaubnis (settlement permit) requires. Both tests have the same format and the same questions; only the pass threshold differs.
The sitting: 33 questions, 60 minutes
| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Questions | 33: 30 from the general catalogue plus 3 from your Land's questions |
| Answers per question | 4, choose the one correct answer |
| Time | 60 minutes, under supervision |
| Einbürgerungstest pass mark | 17 of 33 correct |
| Leben in Deutschland pass mark | 15 of 33 correct |
| Fee | 25 Euro per sitting |
The two thresholds apply to the same sitting. A Leben in Deutschland result of 15 or 16 correct passes the integration course test, but does not yet prove the knowledge naturalization requires; at 17 or more correct, the same sitting does both.
The catalogue: your 310 questions
Every question in the sitting comes from the BAMF's official Gesamtfragenkatalog (catalogue Stand 07.05.2025). The catalogue holds 460 questions in total: 300 general questions (Allgemeine Fragen) plus 10 questions for each of the 16 Länder (federal states). Your preparation set is the 310 questions made up of the 300 general questions plus the 10 for the Land where you live, so choosing your Land is the first step of preparation. The BAMF notes that the wording of individual questions and answers in the catalogue may deviate slightly from the questions used in the live test papers: the catalogue is the official study catalogue, and it is the complete set the test is drawn from.
Booking, the test centre, and the certificate
The test is sat in person at a BAMF-approved test centre (Prüfstelle), usually a Volkshochschule (VHS); it is never taken online. The fee is a flat 25 Euro per participant. Bring photo ID so the centre can verify who you are. After a passed sitting you receive a certificate on a uniform form, and it stays valid if you move to another Land within Germany. If you do not pass, the test can be retaken.
How to prepare with this section
Start on the citizenship hub by picking your Land. Its page gives you three ways in: the catalogue trainer, which runs all 310 of your questions as one practice set; separate practice for the 300 general questions and for your Land's 10; and two timed mocks that reproduce the real sitting (33 questions drawn 30 plus 3, 60 minutes), one scored against the Einbürgerungstest pass mark of 17 and one against the Leben in Deutschland mark of 15. You can also browse the full catalogue for your Land on one page, with the correct answer for each question, which is the fastest way to review a topic area. Explanations in practice and review are part of Solvi Pro, like the rest of the site.
