TOPIK for Korean University Admission

Last updated March 20265 min read

Most Korean universities require a TOPIK certificate for admission. The minimum level depends on the program: Level 3–4for undergraduate, Level 4+ for graduate. English-taught programs may waive the requirement. Always check your target university's specific admissions page, as requirements change.

Undergraduate Requirements

Level 3 is the minimum at most universities, but Level 4 is more common as a practical baseline. Some universities offer conditional admission at a lower level, requiring you to complete additional Korean language courses alongside your degree. Many universities also require TOPIK Level 4 or higher for graduation, even if admission was granted at Level 3.

Graduate Programs

Graduate programs typically require TOPIK Level 4 or higher. Korean-taught programs set this standard because thesis writing and seminar discussions happen in Korean. Some programs accept Level 3, but this is less common.

English-taught graduate programs may accept TOEFL (80+) or IELTS (6.0+) instead of TOPIK. However, even programs marketed as English-taught may include some Korean-language coursework. Verify the specific program's language requirements before assuming TOPIK is not needed.

KGSP (Korean Government Scholarship Program)

KGSP provides full funding for international students to study in Korea, including tuition, living expenses, and airfare. All KGSP scholars complete a mandatory 1-year Korean language training program before starting their degree.

TOPIK Level 5 before applying to KGSP saves you a year of language training and provides a monthly stipend bonus. If your timeline allows, reaching Level 5 before applying is the most efficient path.

Language School Pathway

If you do not yet have the required TOPIK level, a common path is to enroll in a Korean language institute for 6–18 months, obtain your TOPIK certification, and then apply to a university. Some language institutes partner with specific universities, and students in partner programs may receive streamlined admission.

Application Timeline

Korean universities have two intake periods:

Complete your TOPIK at least 2–3 months before the application deadline. This allows time for score processing (6–7 weeks for PBT, 3 weeks for IBT) and document preparation. Plan your test date accordingly.

Student Visas (D-2)

D-2 student visa requirements vary by institution and are sometimes lower than the university's own admission requirements. Typically, TOPIK Level 2–3 is sufficient for the visa application, but your university may require a higher level for enrollment. Check both your university's and the immigration office's requirements.

English-Taught Programs

Programs taught entirely in English (such as Yonsei's Underwood International College) typically waive the TOPIK requirement and accept TOEFL or IELTS instead. These programs are the exception. The majority of degree programs at Korean universities are taught in Korean and require TOPIK.
